NORMANBY, Last Night.
An inquest was held yesterday by Dr Gibbs, coroner, on a Maoii who was found dead on Wednesday morning, near Manawapou bridge. The evidence as to the finding of the body was taken, when, by request of the police, the inquest was adjourned to the Manutahi Hotel on Monday next. The facts, so tar as ascertained, tend to show'that deceased was at the Manutahi Hotel on Tuesday, in company with other Maoris, and that a quarrel ensued concerning some beer alleged by some of the natives to be bad. Blows followed, and the natives were summaiily ejected from the house. The landlord (Gallagher), followed up the natives outside, and struck deceased on the head with a heavy gum-stick club, from the effects of which he is supposed to have died shortly afterwards. The contusions on the head of deceased are of a severe character. The natives will not allow the head to be opened. Dr Smith examined the exterior of the head, and will give evidence on Monday. There does not appear to be much doubt that death resulted from the blow with the stick.
