However, before any steps could bs taken by Major Goring, the natives dispersed. Food was not given out in the marae, but in the wharea. Mr Messenger, the Government interpreter, went into ParihaUa with a view of ascertaining, if possible, what had been done at the meeting, but was not successful. At 9.30 yesterday nforning, the natives again assembled in the marae. Sixty men from Newell-road, and twentyfive from Pungarehu, were sent for, in order to be in readiness if required, i Mr Bryce telegraphed from here to Colonel Roberts to, have some whares in the neighbourhood of the marae pulled down, and in such a way such a way that they would fall into the , marae, and also that ,all males who were strangers to Parihaka should be ai rested if in any numbers. Twelve whares were destroyed, and as soon as the alien tribes saw this they left Panhaka, so Colonel Roberts decided not to arrest any. The Maoris were told that destruction, of whares was decided on through, their holding the meeting. The messenger visited Parihaka again during the afternoon, and was satisfed a meeting had taken place, and he was informed that it was in consequence of Mr Bryoe being out of office that the. meeting was held. Telegrams this morning say everything is quiet, and there is no sign of meeting, but the natives are sullen. The natives have taken away the goods removed, from the whares, destroyed.
