NEWCASTLE, HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of this board was held at '"' 'Kellow's hotel, 'Whatawhata, on Tuesday, April 4th. There were present : Messrs Corbpy (chairman), Day, and Bailey. — Mr Charltou waited upon the board, urging that some steps should be taken to give Mr Sceats ana himself some means of egress from their farms other than the present oue, Which they were only allowed to use on sufferance, being through the property of Mr Hindle. The board promised to consider the matter at a full meeting, but gave Mr Charlton to understand that in the present financial state of the board there was very little pro£j»pect of anything being done this year. — Mr Mauktelow waited upon the board with an application for some money on .of Mr Vowless. The board ' decided to get Mr Sandes to measure up the work and issue a cheque in full for amount due. — Mr Manktelow also brought a letter from Mr Vowless, stating that he, Mr Manktelow, would proceed with the contracts at Tuhikaramea, taken by Vowless. The specifications were signed and a promise given that work should be commenced at once. — Mr Corboy asked ' , the board to authorise the expenditure of a small amount to prevent any fresh doing further damage to a filling on road near Vowless' contract. — Granted. — A letter was received from B. 0. Shepherd and others, asking that something be done at hill near his place. Mr Shepherd having at a former meeting waited upon the board, and asked to have ten pounds which had been voted for this work expended in making road over swamp at back of his property, to connect with the Tuhikaramea-Hamilton Road, it was decided to leave this matter over till next i meeting. — A letter from Mr Hobbs was read, asking that some compensation be given him for use of road through his late property. Mr Hobbs having transferred all rights in said property to Mr Bonf ivy, and the board having arranged to give Mr Bonfrey 20 acres of land for his road, they could not recognise Mr Hobbs in the matter. — A letter was received from ; Mr Dawson, enclosing copy of a resolution passed at a meeting held at Whatawhata, asking this board to call a meeting of ratepayers to consider the desirability of having the district divided. On enquiry it was found that a very limited number of ratepayers were present at said meeting. The secretary was theiefore instructed to acknowledge Mr Dawson's letter, and inform him that the board did not think it necessary to convene a meeting, as the IStli clause of the Highways Act stipulates that 25 votes must be represented at any meeting to render it incumbent on a board to call a meeting of ratepayers. — A few small accounts were passed and the business terminated.
