Answers to Correspondents.
"M.JV- According to the Live Stock Journal, the Herefords have long been considered the best beef-makers in England, but their reputation for milk is not yet established. It is claimed that they fatten quicker, and that their flesh is better than is the case with Shorthorns, but the Shorthorns have a superior reputation for milk. The farmer looks for the highest practical combination of flesh and milk in his dairy cattle, and few doubt that the Shorthorns supply this condition more satisfactorily than any other breed — especially in the midland and northern counties. In the south and east the Kedskins predominate. The Devons, the Sussex, the Southammer, and the Norfolk and Suffolk Polls will continue to hokl their own in the districts to which they belong; and so far as Scotland ia concerned, the same may be said of the Ayrshires, the Galloways, the Aberdeeus, and the-shaggy-coated West Highlanders ; while in the Channel Islands, the Jei*seys and Gueruseyaaje^v will be supplanted.
