The Russian Nihilists have decided to abandon the policy of assassination which they have so daringly and persistently adopted for such a long time past. They announce that they have determined on a system of pacific agitation, which they think will be more effective in bringing about the reforms they desire. Great dissatisfaction exists amongst the laboring classes of the United States, the present rate of wages being considered quite insufficient. An extensive strike has commenced, and is spreading rapidly. The Danish Government has decided to despatch an exploring expedition to the North Pole, to sail from Copenhagen in June. The whole of Turkestan is now practically subject to Russian influence, and trading lelations are established for caravans to proceed regularly from the Russian towns to Turkestan. A fire broke out in the chief theatre in Marseilles. Before the conflagration could be stopped the theatre was completely gutted. No lives were lost. It has been arranged to hold a conference of freethinkers at Rome in the autumn, at which representatives from the whole of the European nations will be present. The presidency of the conference will be offered to Mr Bradlaugh. Owing to the exceptional mildness of i the winter the ice melted unusually early this year in the Baltic, which is now completely open for navigation. Hanlan and Trickett have been training for some time for the champion sculling match to be rowed on the Thames in May. Hanlan has finished practice, and is reported in splendid condition. An avalanche has occurred in the State of Nevada. An enormous body of snow came down from the mountains overwhelming in its course a number of dwellings. So far as at present known eighteen lives have been lost. A Communists fete has been held at Paris, when violent speeches were delivered and rioting took place on an extensive scale. Before the disturbance could be suppressed several lives were lost. A fire broke out in one of the theatres at St. Petersburg resulting in the destruction of the whole building, which was completely gutted. Fortunately no lives were lost. A number of prisoners condemned to imprisonment in Servia have escaped. Among them were several banished for political offences. The labourers of Ireland are organising with a view to securing wages from the tenant farmers. A debate is now going on in the French Legislature on the question of the oath of allegiance proposal to be made. The question is being discussed with considerable warmth:
