r\fT WELLINGTON, Night. afternoon the seal of the colony was affixed! by the Government to the compact with the West Coast (North Island) Railway Company. The document has been sent to Christchurch for the Governor's signature.
Opening of Parliament r <~~ . It is announced that it has been finally decided upon this afternoon that' Eairlia; ment should meet on Thursday,' 18th May, for-the- despatch, of, business,-and that a proclamation ,-to this effect has been forwarded to His Excellency for his signature. There is little or no excitement, as yet over the sculling match between Hearn and Messenger, which will be rowed on Saturday, weather permitting. An examinationof the beacon in French Pass which Vas struck by the'steamer Star of the South,, shows that the beac6n was, bodily, canted over, but it will' probably Tje as serviceable I' as ever. f| •
