PIAKO RACES.

The annual race meeting at Piako, in celebration of S. Patrick's Day, was held oil the course about a quarter of a mile from the Nottingham Castle Hotel, and was as usual pretty successful. The weather being in every respect favourable for the outing, fully 200 persons, of whom a large number were Maories attended. Between £40 and £50 were distributed as prize money, Mr Brown, of the Nottingham Castle Hotel, had a booth on the ground, and provided the refreshments. The Piako handicap was the best contested race of the day and created unusual excitement. The other events were also pretty evenly contested, and the stewards deserve credit for the manner in which their programme was carried out. The following are the results of the meecing :—: —

HANDICAP HURDLE RACK. Of 12 soys. Second horse to receive 2 soys. out of stakes. 1£ miles over six nights of hurdles, 3ft. 6in. high. Entrance fee, 20s. Mr K. Carter's Blucher ... 1 Maori 2 Luna ... ... ... ... 3 Winnie Gray also started. Luna was the most likely winner of this race but he was run off the hnrdle at the last jump and came in third.

PIAKO HANDICAP, Of 12 soys. Second horse to receive two soys. out of stakes. Distance 2 miles. Entrance fee 20s. TeUaxia 1 Little Nell 2 Omega, Maori, Secret, and Arapipi, also started. This was a very well contested event and exhibited great enthusiasm, Buckland's Omega which was ridden by Mr Pilling, looked the most likely horse before starting, but raced nowhere. Littlo Nell Avas ridden well by young Ticklepenny, and would certainly have won the race had he not made a mistake in the distance. As it was she ran an excellent second, being only beaten by a few inches.

POXY RACE. Of £5. Distance once round the course. For ponies of 14 hands and under. Catch weights. Nobody ... . . 1 No Name 2 Two others also btarted.

MAORI RACE. Of £5. Distance 2 miles. Catch weights. Te Uaua 1 Warta 2 Poplar and Karapuka also started.
