PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held at the council office, Lakestreet, Cambridge, at 2 o'clock on Friday last. There were present: — Messrs. R. BT. D. Fergusson, (chairman), J. C. Firth, H. E. Whitaker, G. E. Ellis, E. Maclean, W. P. Chepmell, W. T. Firth, and W. L. C. Williams. The usual preliminary business being disposed of, it was resolved, on the consideration of a letter from Mr Murray 1 c proposed deviation of road, that he be informed that the road referred to by him was not a county road, being within the boundaries of the Waitoa Highway District; also that the letter be referred to the Waitoa Highway Board. — In reference to Mr Murray's application for a slaughterhouse license it was resolved that he be informed that as the bye-laws were not yet in force, the information asked for in his letter could not 9t present be given. — On the motion of Or. Chepmell, it was resolved that the treasurer of the council be authorized to arrange with the bank for an overdraft of £1000. — On the motion of Or. J. C. Firth, it was resolved that the council be furnished by the clerk at each monthly meeting with a statement of assets and liabilities, a& under : — First : bank balance supported by bank-book ; second, statement of amounts due on completed contracts ; third, statement of amounts due on tenders accepted ; fourth, statement of assets, viz (a) rates due but not paid, [l>) license fees due but not paid ; (c) goldfields revenue due from Government ; (d) Government subsidies due ; and that such statement if correct be duly passed at such meeting and entered on the minutes accordingly. — On the motion of Or. Firth, it was resolved that the whole matter relative to the Oxford-Piako road, be referred to a committee consisting of Ors. Williams and Maclean, to report on the same to next meeting. — On the motion of Or. J. 0. Firth, it was resolved that a committee consisting of any two councillors and the chairman be empowered to accept tenders for the Waihou bridge, provided that such tender does not exceed £250. — On the motion of Cr. J. C. Firth, it was resolved that the sum of JEIO be paid to the proprietors of the Eureka claim on the Te Aroha goldfieltl as part cost of track formed by them at the goldfield. — On the motion of Cr. Whitaker, it was resolved that the engineer be empowered to expend the sum of £20 upon the main road at Te Aroha, near the slaughterhouse. — The following tenders were received for road works at Te Aroha: — Section No. 1, A. Butler, £2 13s per chain ; Smith and Grimes, £2 17s ; McCullough and Wilson, ,C 3 13 ; John Allen and party, £2 19s 3d ; Farrell and Eusor, £1 17s 6d ; Charles Maclean, £3 14s. Section No 2, Charles Maclean, £4 per chain ; John Allen and party, £3 10s ; A. Butler, £2 19s. On the motion of Cr Firth, it was resolved that Farrell and Ensor's tender for No. 1 section, and A. Butler's for No. 2 be accepted. — The sum of £5 was paid in by Mr Whitaker on account of Mr Mackay, of Te Aroha, for slaughterhouse license. — The following accounts were passed for payment : — C. Tuck, collector, £2 11s Sd ; John Hunt (valuer), £16 16s ; same (returning officer), £2 2s ; William 1 Wilkinson, advertising, £1 6s 3d ; T. G. Sandes, engineer, £7 6s : Smith and Grimes, £15 ; proprietors of Eureka mine, £10 ; Government storekeeper, 15s 3d. — The clerk was instructed to write to Mr J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., enquiring the result of his interview with the Premier re the proposed deviation in the CambridgeTauranga Road, and the deductions made from the county subsidy on account of hospitals and charitable aid. The next meeting of the council was fixed for 2 p.m. on the 31st March. This concluded the business.
