In the Handicap Skysail ran, but half way round the course iell and broke his back.
Drying potatoes is a great industry in Rochester, N.Y. The potatoes are sliced, put in a steam box for a few minutes to keep the starch in, and then dried. When desired for use they are soaked before cooking.
A Cocoanut Grove. —The special reporter of the Queenslander, who has been giving a series of interesting reports on the sugar-growing capabilities of the north-east coast, has one descriptive article which shows other remunerative products can be grown in that district besides sugar. Tnis paper describes his visit to the cocoanut grove of Mr Barnes, near Mackay, which he_ says is " one of most remarkable sights in all Australia." Mr Barnes, it appears, has 1200 of these graceful trees, with Itheir long, feathery, frond-like leaves, growing on ten acres of ground, and as the leaves of one tree touch those of its neat' neighbour,' V the whole forms a shady grove f of elegant beauty, unparallelled, in. its effect, any? where on the surface of this wide conti nent:"; >The oldesfctrees reach'a height of twenty feet.
