CAMBRIDGE HIGHWAY BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Cambridge Highway Board, was held at Camp's Hotel, Hantapu, on Wednesday la&t. — Present : Mcbsis S. S. Graham (chairman), John Martyn, junr., and J. J. Smith. — The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the following accounts Avere passed and ordered to be paid, viz., Messrs Hay & Speed, law expenses in the case Douglas v. the Board, £8 12s ; Mr Fitzgerald, commission on rates, £12 ; A Graham, carting timber, £1 10s ; L. B. Ewen, balance of account, £5 12s 2d ; do. deposit returned, £4 ; R. Hayton, filling up gravel pit, £2 ; Total, £33 13s lOd. Only two tendeis weie submitted for the concrete culveit at the foot of Ewen's Hill, the consideration of which was postponed until the engineer's estimate has been obtained. — A letter was read from Selby, tcndeiing his resignation as a member of the board, and giving as his rea&on for so doing that " The board evinces no disposition to meet the fair requirements of the by-roads, but on the other hand seems determiued to centre the expenditure at one end of the district. " —Mr Smith characterised the statement contained in Mr Selby's letter as inaccurate and unmanly, and moved that the board go over the accounts from Ist July last to disprove it. — The secretary having produced the cash book and headed a sheet of paper with Main Road and By-Roads. The items in the cash acacounts were gone over seriatim, general charges, such as salaries, commission on rates collected, advertising, &c, being equally divided between the two headings. With the following result, viz., expenditure on main road, £ISS 10s 10U1; on by roads, £195 0s o£d.— It was resolved that the result of the investigation be recorded in the minutes and communicated to Mr Selby.
A young lady was sitting with a gallant captain in a charmingly decorated recess. Qn her knee was a diminutive neice, placed there to play propriety. In the adjoining room, with the door open, were the rest of the company. Says the little niece in a jealous and very audible voice, " Auntie kiss me too." We leave you to imagine what has just happened. " You should say twice, Ethel dear ; two is not grammar" was the immediate rejoinder,
