ROADS IN RAGLAN COUNTY.
Acting upon a report Avhich has been furnished them by Mr Clarke, C.E., the residents have taken steps to induce the Government to open a road through the Pepepe block which extends from near the coalmines at Taupiri, to a point close to fche top of Raglan harbour. Mr Clarke, in his report says, that having ridden over the proposed ropte he is firmly of opinion that a good road can be made, and that there are no engineering difficulties of any consequence to overcome. The road will be the means of opening up, and redering easy of access, thousands of acres of Government land, and all settlers are satisfied that when the matter has been fairly represented to the proper authorities they will see fit to favourably consider the prayer of the petition which is about to be forwarded to them, suggesting that the work be undertaken. The road in question will join the JKaglan and Waipa road near Mr Moon's residence, which is about seven miles from Raglan. In a map of the proposed line of road which has been drawn by Mr Clarke, and which accompanies the petition, its length appears to be about twelve miles. Considering that it will render available such a large quantity of Crown Lands, it is more than likely that the repuest of the settlers will receive favourable recognition. Writing on road matters, our correspondent says : It may be worth while to mention that the damage caused by the heavy rains last month to the Raglan and Waipa road on the Hakaramata range will soon be put right by Mr King, who lias been engaged to effect the necessary repairs. Vehicles can now get over the range in safety, and travellers to Raglan need now fear no inconvenience from the lately bad state of this part of the Raglan road. Another road in this district upon which great improvements have been made this summer is that from Ruapuke to Raglan. Where not many years since this was but rough bridle track, we have now a road over which could be driven with comparitive ease any wheeled vehicle. Any person who may have seen this road at the time I speak of would be astonished at the change wrought in its appearance. The Karioi Road Board have for years been indefatigable in their endeavours to make the road a good one, and although they set themselves to no ordinary task, the result is as yet every way a creditable to them. What I might call the final touches have just been given to that portion of the road between Waitomotomo and Mr Duncans residence at Ruapuke. Philip Bros, have done the necessary work, and appear to have given every satisfaction to the Trustees, by the manner their work has been performed. Mr W. Ward has also been doing some work near the Mata bridge, wliich has .rendered good a hitherto bad portion of this road. I notice that something requires to be done in. front of Mr J. Galvin'a, and then I would find some difficulty in advising for the present further improvements.
