AUCKLAND, Last Night. The negotiations between the Good Templars and publicans over the licensing question have completely broken down. There will probably be contests in all districts. The charge against Merrick, for alleged arson, is proceeding. Mr Hughes, Captain of the Fire Brigade, swore there had been three distinct fires on in the burnt house, and kerosine had been thrown on the floor. One witness deposed that Merrick was in the house just prior to the outbreak of the fire.
DUNEDIN, Last Night. Gorton has been scratched for all engagements at the autumn meeting.
CHRISTOHURCH, Last Night. William Can 1 , stonemason, was working this morning on a scaffolding at the Museum, when the board he was standing on gave way, and he fell to the ground, striking his head on a block of stone. He sustained an extensive fracture of the skull, and died shortly after his removal to the hospitai.
