THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

In* the formation of new companies, writes a correspondent of tbe Wuwjanui Herald, care should be taken that they are so framed as to be a source of good to the greatest number, and not monopolies, nor should large dividends be the sole aim, but rather the fostering and encouraging of individual and private enterprise, by doing that as a corporation which would be impossible to do single handed. The meat trade is a fair field for a company, and there can be no doubt that it would pay a very large dividend, as it could be worked on little capital; and would turn over large sums of money with little or no risk. For this reason it ought to be so framed that those who conduce most to the profit of the concern should reap a proportionate benefit. Capital we cannot do without, and investors should reap good interest for their cash ; but capital is not everything. Working on the co-operative Erinciple, which is fairest for all, that is, xing the maximum dividend payable to shareholders at a very good rate, never to be exceeded, and then share -what other profit there, may be among producing shareholders in proportion to the amount of business they have done with the company. This would stimulate shareholders to push business, it would also induce all who were in any way connected with the trade to become shareholders. This will be obvious, as it will not unfrequently happen that the man who does the largest, business will be the one who has the smallest amount of money to spare to inveist in shares ; but on this principle he ,who has v only one share, and is doing a large amount of business on^ that amount of business would reap his own proportion! of -profit, without in any way^ diminishing^the dividend of the' investing shareholder. Care should also be taken that the shares fee not held by investors' to'thkjj^lußiott of producers.- Itjwould;beJlMio«t, desirable to enact that after the floating of a company no shares be allotted" to any but producers, ,that;. a jlarge^reserve of shares be held by f $e£ctfmpany to, allot j to future! » producers, «| as, there is no 1 doubt that every * settle^ in < the ? neighbourhoodfwill in/time JffdM%;to Ms *dSantagei to;become^at>®Holder ( }in a concern w%c^mus>^^^vthe^ chief source, of wealth of the fcoloay,, -, './ f'^lf%^' *■"
