CRICKET. English Eleven Y. Auckland Twenty-two.
The match was resumed on Saturday, and the weather was again all that could be desired. Shrewsbury and Scotton, the not-6nts, who on the previous day defied all the local bowling talent, were at length got rid of — Shrewsbury for 77, and Scotton for 40. The total innings of the Eleven amounted to 214. Auckland's second innings closed for 94, to which Dewes contributed 31, Yates 18, and Arneil 11, these being the only Aucklanders who scored double figures. Dewes' score is the highest individual score made by auy New Zealand cricketer against the Eleven. The Auckland men saved a one innings' defeat by three runs, Ulyett and Bates made the required number, and the Englishmen thus won the match by ten wickets. Midwinter was the most successful bowler for the Eleven, securing 12 wickets for 45 runs. There were about 3000 persons present.
