HARAPEPE.

Thk usual amount of ajfathy was displayed on the day fixed foi' the election of the school committee for the present year. I think I may safely say there •was not one of the ratepayers, of even those most interested in the subject, who have children attending the school, pi*esent, saving "Your Own," and as he does not hold the same opinions as the renowned " two tailors of Tooley street," of course there was no meeting. So at present I suppose we legally have not a committee. So much for educational matters. I suppose agricultural matters are partly to blame for it, as almost all the settlers here have been very busy haymaking. The weather has been very unsettled, and has caused a good deal of extra work, and a great deal of the hay has been damaged. Some of the potato crops in this district are looking well, and likely to turn out good, though on the whole I think there will be as good returns as the last season. Wheat is not a favorite crop here, as I notice almostall those that grow it once, do no>repeat the experiment. From that I presume that it is not as Josh Billings .would - say a "financial success." Settlers who have not 'planted any (fruit trees "are now beginning to feel it, as so many/ have ide-b pended on the old Maori peach trees; for fruit, and as they are now getting) very few and' far between, the peaches are get? , ting tho same.-r(Correspomlent, Feb.
