PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the council was held at the Town Board Office, Cambridge, at 2 o'clock on Wednesday last. There were present, Crs. W. P. Chepmell (in the chair),' J. C. Firth, W. L. C. Williams, J. P. Campbell, H. E. Whitaker, and G. E. Ellis.— The usual preliminary business . being disposed of the following resolutions were psssed — On the motion of Cr. Mrth it was resolved that Mr LipseyV appointment as ranger be advertised in the lFahkato Times — On the motion of' Cr. Firth .it was resolved that iv the opinion of this council the charging the county with the sum of £644, (out of £701 Is 3d amount of subsidy due to this county) for hospital maintenance and charitable aid is most impolitic, and injurious, and cripples the finances of the county, the county having no control or supervision over the expenditure of this large amounts of money, and that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Colonial Treasurer, J. B. White Esq. M.H.R., and the chairman of the Taranaki County Council. — On the motion of Cr. J. C. Firth it was resolved that the terms offered ■ by the Tauranga County re Uambridge-Tauranga road as expressed in their letter of January 4th be accepted, tenders for fcke Piako portion to be called for in this county, and the work to be proceeded with without delay, this resolution to be wired to the Tauranga County Council — On the motion of Cr. J. P. Campbell it was resolved that in order to complete the Tauranga-Cambridge road it is necessary for the purpose of avoiding a most dangerous road across a mountain chain to make a diversion on the Hinuera plain.at a point where the Mangawhero stream enters the plain, thence along the Mangawhero valley, under the bluff known as Piirekaurengarenga, through the property of Messrs J. C. Firth and W. F. Buckland, thence along the said valley to a low saddle in the range, thence through the properties of Messrs Maguire, Ellis, Simmens, Hewitt, Russell, and the Auckland Agricultural Company, to a point on the road near the most southerly bridge over the Karapero stream. Secondly ; That the above being one of the most important port'ous of the Great South Road, it is olear that the cost of such a road ought not to be borne by this county, but that is fairly a work to be provided by the Government. Consequently the attention of Mr Whyte the member for this district be called to this subject, and that a sufficient sum placed on the Estimates for its construction. — In connection with tpe foregoing resolution, Mr Ellis was requested to obtain from the proprietors of the land on the line of road whether they would be willing to give the land for a two chain road as described in the resolution — On the motion of Cr. Whitaker it was resolved that the county surveyor be instructed to prepare specifications, and call for tenders for widening the present pack track at Te Aroha, and continuing same to Golden Crown claim ; the whole track to have a width of six feet in the solid and bush to be cleared half a chain on sunny side. —On the motion of Cr. Whitaker, it was resolved that the county engineer be instructed to survey road up the Waiorongomai Creek from point A to point B, as marked on plan, and call for tenders for same ; tenders to be in by next monthly meeting. — On the motion of Cr. Firth, it was resolved that a letter be written to the Hon. John Hall, urging the necessity of continuing the telegraph line from Paeroa to Te Aroha.— On the motion of Cr. Whitakei-, it was resolved that an application be made to the Government, through Mr Superintendent Thompson, requesting that an extra constable (mounted) be stationed at .Te Aroha, for the protection of Morrinsville and other outlying districts in this county.— On the motion of Cr. Campbell, it was resolved that Cr. Whitaker and the county engineer be authorised to accept tenders for widening the pack-track, the cost not to exceed £350. —On the motion of Cr. Whitaker, it was resolved that the clerk be directed to take the necessaay steps to obtain the roll of voters for the county.— Cr. Chepmell brought up a report upon slaughter-houses, in accordance with which it was decided to hold a special meeting on Friday, the 3rd of March, at 2 p.m., for making bye-laws for the regulation of same:— The following accounts were passed for payment :—: — Smith and Grimes, £100; Betherington and McNight, £182 ss ; O'Halloran and Dogherty, £82 17s 6d ; D. H. Bayldon, £12 125; Alex. Aitkin, £12 125; O'Donohoe and Stanley, £82 ; County Engineer, £50 9a. — The next ordinary meeting of the council was fixed for 2 80 p.m. on the 3rd March. This was all the business.
