SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
Kihikiui. — Meeting held in the jjchool-houee on Monday evening. Mr Andrew Kay was voted to the chair. There was a large attendance. The accoQAsft were not passed, for it transpired thiw ; there were two chairmen and two separate accounts ; that of one of them was not audited ; and that of the other was considered in some other way informal. The voting was by ballot. Fourteen candidates went to the poll, of whom the following were duly elected :—: — Messrs Kay, Anderson, Farrell, Grace, Blencoe, Elmsley, and Ashby. Mr Grace was subsequently appointed chairman for the current year. Alexandra. — Meeting held at the school at noon on Monday evening, Mr A. Ahier in the chair. Mr Aubin, the late chairman, gave a brief account of all important matters that had been transacted during the committee's term of j office, showing a balance to the credit of \ £1 ISs 7d, but a balance that would hardly meet existing exigencies. The election of the new committee resulted as follows : — Messrs C. B. Gentil, J. Aubin, J. Sage, Tlios. Finch, Alfred Smith, George Miles, and Patrick Connell. Votes of thanks to the retiring committee and to the acting chairman concluded the business. At a meeting of the committee held immediately afterwards, Mr Aubin was elected chairman. Cambridge. — At the annual meeting on Monday evening, for electing a committee, the chairman read the balancesheet, which showed a total income for the year of £40 13s 6d, and expenditure covering the same amount. The annual report showed the number of children on the roll at the end of December last was 212, with an average attendance of 169, An additional wing had been added to the building, covering 400 square feet of space, and the playground had been planted with evergreens, presented by Mr Sharp, for which the committee returned thanks. At the examination for standards held on the 3rd and 4th November, 214 pupils were on the roll. Of that number 96 presented themselves for examination : 86 passed and 10 failed in the Ist, 2nd, and 3rd standards. None failed in the higher standards. In December several cases of diptheria were leported by Dr Waddington, in consequence of which the holidays commenced one week earlier than usual. It concluded by thanking the teacher and assistants for the efficient manner inwhichthe school waa conducted. The master's report was also read. School Ventilation. — After the election of the new members whose names were given the last issue, a meeting of the committee was held, at which a report furnished by Dr. Waddington on the ventilation of the school to the Board of Education at Auckland, was considered. The report which had been forworded to the committee designated the ventilation of the school as most imperfect, in fact, absolutely bad. Each schoolroom was supplied with an ample ventilation at the top to allow of the escape of heated and foul air, but no provision whatever was made for the admission of fresh air from below. Rooms where many persons were confined could only be properly ventilated by ascending currents of fresh air. In this case the simple process of putting in a square foot of finely perforated zinc or iron at each end of the room, level with the floor would supply the requisite quantity for healthy respiration. All the early cases of diptheria and diptheritic sore throat had occured amongst the school children. The unhealthy symptoms complained of by the children were caused by the excess of carbonic acid in the atmosphere of the rooms, the result of deficient supply of fresb and pure air from below. It was computed that about eighteen cubic feet of fresh air per minute was required for every person. For the cost of a few shillings this defect could easily be remedied. The Board authorised the committee if they thought proper, to carry out the above suggestions at the cost of the Board . The committee deemed it advisable to have the work done. This wj>a all the business. Noaruawahia. — The annual meeting of householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening, at which a large number of residents were present , the chair being occupied by Mr G. Lindsay Scott, who opened the business of the evening by calling upon the secretary of the outgoing committee to read the financial statement, which had been duly audited. The statement shewed the total receipts for the year to have been £34 11s 9d, and the expenditure £30 10s sd, leaving a balance in hand of £4 Is 4d, to which might be added as an asset the sum 11s 2d, fetill owing the committee by a candidate for Parliamentary honors, for the hire of the schoolroom and a broken slate. Messrs Kay. and Elliott, having been appointed scrutineers the meeting proceeded to elect the new committee, and out of 12 nominated, the following gentlemen were declared to have received the largest number of votes and therefore duly elected ;—Captain Lindsay, Messrs G. F. Dickeson, William Butcher, Peter Barclay, John Mcßurney, Emile Siminelhag, and R. James. A vote of thanks to the outgoing committee and to the chairman of the meeting having been enthusiastically carried, the meeting dispersed ; and a meeting of the new committee was held immediately after, at which Captain Lindsay was re-elected chairman and Mr James, secretary and treasurer for the ensuing year.
