SPORTING ITEMS.

The Auckland Stud Company's Musket's son Petronel continues to win good races, his last success being in the Queen's Plate at Liverpool, run on November 10th, where he beat Mr Bragg's Victor Emanuel and Count de Legrange's Poulet. The distance was two miles, and the Plate worth 200gs. The following is a description of the race : — Petronfel made the running, followed by Victor Emanuel, Mistress of the Robes, and Prestonpans, when Petronel increased his lead, and Prestonpans went on third. At the milepost, however, he was pulled back last ; and although Poulet went into third plaxse, he was immediately repassed by Mistresj of the Robes. Five furlongs from home the lot took close order, and PrestonjWft pulled his way into third place ; hut he disappeared again half-way up the straight, and P.etironel, always holding Victor Emanuel safe, won by two lengths ; five lengths between second and third, and half a length between the third and fourth, Prestonpanu being in the latter position. , '• It will encourage those owners in New Zealand who possess youug stwlj by

Tubal Cain to value them pretty highly, as the winner of the Melbourne champion raee — Coriolanus — is by that sire. "Augur" writes as follows in the Attstralabian : — "There seems to be a difficulty with Grip in New Zealand. The horse is the property of Messrs Robinson .and Lance, and is engaged in the Wellington Cup, but as he is being trained by R. Ray, who was disqualified by the V.R.C. for riding Mata as he should not have been ridden, there ia some doubt as to whether he will get the stake should he win. Aa the Wellington Jockey Club endorsed the verdict of the V.R.C., it would stultify itself if it did not stick to its colours. " Blue Gown.
