LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH.]
Ouu_correspondent wires last night : — William King, of Ngatimaru, an historical warrior of Waekene and Waitara, died on the 13th, about five miles up the Waitara river. A great tangi is being held over him. William Taylor, of Waitara, historian, is lying very ill at his pah. The following nominations were received by Mr Percival for the Helensville race's, to be held on the 30th January :—: — Helensville Handicap : Rawenata, Maori, Lonehand, Lara, Hora, Randwick, and N. or M. Settlers' Handicap : Vampire, Harkaway, Wild Idyll, N. or M., Tui, and Native. Handicap Hurdle Race : Rawenata, Akeake, Lonehand, Harkaway, Bideawee, and Brad laugh. Maiden Plate : Arline, Twilight, and Tui. Information has been received from Tauranga that a digger named Wells arrived at Katikati from Paeroa on Tuesday. He was found by the Maoris on Saturday, on the island of Tuhikake, used as a cemetery by the natives, who believed he was there three or four days without food. When found he was in a completely exhausted state.
