CRICKET. English Eleven Y. Otago Eighteen.
The three days' match between the English Eleven and the Otago Eighteen was commenced on Thursday. The _Otago team was very weak, several of the best batsmen being unable to play. Rattray played the best innings, being at the wickets for over an hour. Midwinter's bowling was very destructive, seven wickets falling to his credit. The Otago team's innings closed for 84, of which Vernon contributed 13, Harris 11, and Rattray 11, these being the only men who scored double figures. Six of Otago's wickets fell for duck's eggs. The Englishmen at the close of the clay's play had put together 17 for the loss of one wicket, Ulyett being caught by Spring, in the slips, for 7. The bowliug of C and W. Frith (late of Canterbury) was excellent.
[per telegraph.] Our Dnnedin correspondent wires :—: — Play was resumed to-day at 12.40, Selby and Barlow resuming their places at the wickets. A strong north-easterly wind was again blowing, and Frith had to contend with it. C. Frith bowled from the other end. The large field prevented rapid scoring. At 24 Barlow was given out leg before wicket by the English umpire. 24 — 2—9.2 — 9. Bates took his place. The incomersoonsignalised hisappearance by lifting Frith past the stand for four, this being the lion's hit of the match so far. Principally by Bates' efforts, 60 appeared on the telegraph board, and Fitzgerald was relieved by W. Frith. Hia first ball Selby put softly in slips, but Spring failed to negotiate it. Runs continued to come freely, and at 80 Frith was tried with the wind. Both batsmen were well set, however, and things were made pretty lively for the field. At 98 Fitzgerald gave way to Macgregor. As a century went up Davenport secured Selby at point. 101—3—27. This innings combined steady play, with good hitting powers. Shrewsbury came next. He only obtained a single, which was well taken in slips by Harris. 104 — 4—l.4 — 1. As soon as Midwinter joined Bates, he should have been run out but for loose fielding on the part of Macgregor. An adjournment for lunch was then made, the score then standing — Ulyett, c Spring, b \V. Frith 7 Barlow, 1 b.w., d C. Frith 9 Selby, c Davenport, bW.
