FIRE AT CAMBRIDGE.
Ox Monday evening Cambridge narrowly escaped being the scene of a disastrouo conflagration through a fire having broke out in the cabinet warehouse of Mr Gumby, Duke-street. A large flax mattrabs became ignited in the front shop, casting a glaring of light over the street' which attracted the attention of a number of people who w«re about at the time. Attempts were made to drag the burning mass out of the house, but the excessive heat and smoke prevented that being accomplished. Matters looked very critical until a man named Charles Hitchman, assisted by Mr Norgrove, ran in, and despite the personal danger they subjected themselves to succeeded inpulling theburning goods into the street. Hitchman was much burned, and had to be brought to the doctor for medical treatment, some of the burns being of a serious nature. This is the second time this man has been instrumental in preventing- disaster through fire in Cambridge within the last week, and his case is one which calls for some kind of recognition. An effort is being made to bring the maUer undor the notice of the insurance companies. '
