HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Vialou, Jones, Peat, Hill, Tippen, Bradley, Lovett, Gaudin, and McGarrigle. — Permission was granted to Mr A. Scott to erect a verandah in front of Iris new premises in Victoria-street, Hamilton. — A report was read from the foreman of works on works which had been executed. He also reported that certain places required attention, namely, Victoria-street, opposite the English Church, No. 1 bridge, and the road at junction of Nayor and .Nixon-streets. The report was referred to the Works Committee with power to act, except as regarded a clause referring to furze growing on the the roads. — Mr R. F. Sandes wrote, drawing the attention of the council to the state of the culvert at the post-office corner. He complained that during the recent heavy rain the water had over-flowed and washed away the path through his garden, and applied to have the damage made good. — The Mayor spoke in support of the application. He sail Mr Sandes had a real grievance against the council on account of damage clone to his garden on several occasions by the overflow of water. — After some discussion it was agreed to refer the matter to the Works Committee with power to act. — The Works Committee reported with reference to the sale of gravel to Mr Coombes for the railway bridge contract, recommending that an agreement be drawn up between the parties, which was resolved upon. — In connection with the same matter a letter was read from Mr C. Carthy, gravel contractor to the borough, complaining that Mr Coombes was allowed to take gravel from the pit which he had opened at a cost of something like £4. — Several of the councillors were of opinion that Mr Carthy had not opened the pit at all, but ultimately it was agreed that he be written to and informed that he could obtain gravel from the face of the bank adjoining that portion now being worked by Mr Coombes, the Works Committee, in the meantime to make enquiries into the alleged grievance and to report at next meeting — The statement of accounts for the month was read as follows : — general account, (overdraft) £445 4s 6d ; special fund account, (credit) £256 13s 2d. The amount of interest due in the bridge loan however, absorbs £201 of the lust named leaving to the credit of the account £55 138 2d. — The following tenders were received for the valuation of the Borough property : E. L. Hope, £12 ; J. S. Edgecumbe £14 10s.— On the motion of Cr. Jones the lowest tender was accepted.— It was resolved to invite tenders for a supply of dog collars for the ensuing year. — The mayor reported that when in Auckland a few days before he had waited on Mr T. Macffarlaue in regard to the £110 award. He found everything in train and Mr P. A. Whitaker had taken the necessary steps to have the award made an order of the Supreme Court. — The councillors expressed great satisfaction at the termination ©f this matter. — The Mayor wished to bring under the notice of the council the 1 b*d state of' the cutting in Victoria-street at the railway crossing. After every shower of rain the water lodged there in large quantities. — Cr. Vialou expressed his entire disapproval of the manner in which the work o£ loworing the street had been done. It was the duty of the Government to leave the street in as good order as they found it. — After some further discussion it was resolved to make representations in the matter to Mr Knorpp, Superintending Engineer This being all the business before the council, the Mayor returned thanks for the courtesy extended towards him during his yeur of office jusfc ended. If he had had disclosed any failing he hoped to amend during 1 the coming year (Applause). — The council then went into committee to consider a motion brought forward by Cr. Peat to make the meetings of the council fortnightly instead of monthly as at present, but after discussing the subjeot at some length, the motion was ruled out of order as the requisite notice had not beun given.— The council t*hen rose.
