The Swedish Lutherans in the United Slates number 300 congregations,, 150 pastors and 70,000 mcmbeis. 40,000 of whom are communicants ; and they, with other Scandinavians, have established four colleges, five theological seminaries and numerous academics and schools. Paris has more poor than any city in the world. The registered poor who ha^e received relief during the present year reaches the number of 354,812, ol whom 200,000 receive outdoor relief. The number supported wholly by charity is over 150 000. In 1789 every tenth person was a confirmed pauper. The annual poor rate of Paris is £25 pet* family. Paris supports 28,000 orphans and foundlings, pays the expenses of 15,000 mothers too poor'to defray themi selves, and has the names of 50,000 poor families on its official lists. '
