Saturday, December 17th. — [Before Captain Jackson, R.M., and Messrs John Knox and S. T. Seddon, and Captain Steele, J.P.]

Trifling Assault CaseMi- T. G. Sandes was complained agaiiifefc, on the information of Dr. Beale, with having assaulted his (Dr. Beale's) son, T. 0. iio.vle, on the evening of Fiiday, the 2nd insfc. Mr O'Neill appeared for defendant The evidence showed that complainant's won waa present at the meeting addrea-'ed by Sir George Grey on the evening labelled, and took rather a demonstrative part in the proceedings. Being remonstrated with for his conduct by defendant, he returned an abrupt reply, which led him (defendant) to pull the lad's ears by way of reprisal. The Couit held that a trifling 1 offence Lad been committed, and inflicted a penalty of Is and costs of Court, leaving each party to defray his own proportion of the rest of the expenses. Solicitors and their Pees. Dr. Beale, complainant in the' previous ' case, complained to Iho Bench of what he conceived to he unfair treatment on the part of a solicitor practising before the Court. He stated, in explanation, he had instructed the solicitor in question to take proceedings for the assault complained of. A day or two subsequent to the iseue of these instructions, the solicitor refused to proceed unless his ' fees were paid iv advance. Mr MacGregor Hay said' he I was the solicitor alluded to, and admitted having received the instructions mentioned by the previous sneaker. ■ He contended, however, a solicitor had «a perfect right to refuse to go on with a case unless his costs were either paid or else provided for, and it was in pursuance of that right he had declined to proceed with i)r" Beale's case. Captain Jackson affirmed, the view expressed by counsel, and on Dr. Beale essaying to make some further explanation Captain Jackson put a stop to the discussion by informing him the' Court desired to hear no more about the matter.

The Doctor and the Druggist. Robson v. Beale.— Plaintiff claimed £6 15s for drugs supplied on the prescription of defendant, a medical practitioner. — The case was partly heard at a previous sitting; the adjournment having been granted for the purpose of adducing corroborative evidence in support; of a statement made by plaintiff and denied by defendant,' viz., that he (defendant) had guaranteed payment for aU,,,druga supplied on his prescription to the railway employe's on^being allowed ar liberal commission thereon. —A. 0. Field depo»ed to. having overheard the arrangement made. Although not present wjtness was. within hearing, and as a matter of fact; ct^liear all that took place on the occasion referred to.— The .Bench gave judgment for £1 18s 7d and costs.

Wages and Wrongful Dismissal. Lizzie Caldwell, ' with whom Thos. Caldwell was conjoined & plaintiff, sued' Messrs J. and C. Gould for wages due under agreement by the female plaintiff to take charge of and provide alfiabour necessary for the, management of defendants' dairy at Waitoa, between lot and 9th September, as also one month's wages in lieu of notice, amounting in all to £15 17s 4d.— Mr Hay .for. plaintiffs; and Mr O'Neill for defendants. The defence was that plaintiff had left her employment without permission; for a period of six days, and. further that she had entertained her husband oii the premises in contravention of her engagement.
