NEWCASTLE HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
The usual monthly meeting of the Newcastle District Board was held at Whatawhata, 011 Wednesday, December 7th, all the members being present. A letter was received fro a Mr Hosking, stating that he was prepared to abide by his cadet's measurement of the cutting made by Mr R Fleming, near Mr Trethaway's. Mi- Fleming had employed another engineer, who had made nearly a thousand yards more of it. The board decided to offer Mr Fleming a cheque for the amount, which he subsequently accepted. — It was resolved to confirm the action taken by the Hamilton District Board re works on the old Whatawhata road. Mr T. G. Sandes having made an offer to do necessary surveys for the opening of Clarkes road for the sura of £10, it was resolved that the Work be done. The following tenders were opened for a culvert on the road near Mr Corboy's :—: — Hunter and Crawford, £31 ; D. F. Scott, £26 185. Mr Scott'a tender was accepted. It was resolved to expend a sum of £10 in making a road over the swamp between Mr Shepherd's and the Hamilton-Tuhi-kavatnea road. Also £30 on the west sld,e of the Waipa river. — Tenders were ordered to be called for labour of erecting, a bridge, for which Mr T. Y. Fitzpatrick offered to give timber. — A petition was received, signed by twenty-two ratepayers," praying that the road past Mr Johns' be opened to connect with the Whatawhata Wad.
