PROPOSED INTRODUCTION OF GAS INTO CAMBRIDGE.
Thk danger which is attached to keiosene lamps as a means of lightning is now attracting considerable attention among a few of the leading business men of Cambridge, especially those whose business is so extensive, and whose stock is so valuable, that they are convinced that in case of fire they might be left ruined men in a very few hours, perhaps minutes ; and this danger is increased tenfold when we consider that in case of a fire breaking out, there is no possible way of extinguishing it until it dies out of its own accord, leaving nothing but a mass of ruins behind it. Kerosene lamps are not always i.ife, and we might quote in support of this the fact that through the bursting of a lamp in the Duke of Cambridge Hotel on Sunday night last, that building narrowly escaped being reduced to ashes. Of course, it is very seldom auch an accident occurs j .but how are we to know when and where they are likely to occur? and it is an old saying that long immunity engenders a false sense of security. Thus convinced of their danger and their helplessness in averting it, a number of gentlemen in Cambridge have jointly agreed to communicate with the Secretary of the Auckland Gas Company, asking him to permit the manager of the company to come to Cambridge and report upon the probable cost of introducing gas into the township.
