DREADFUL FIRE AT VIENNA. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE.
A Rktjtkr's cablegram, dated Vienna, December 9th, states : — A. disastrous conflagration, accompanied with an immense loss, of life occured last night in this o'ty during the performance at the Theatre. A lighted lamp fell on the stage, which was at once ignited. The fire spread with great rapidity, and in a short time the flames had blocked all the means of exit from the building. Sixty persons leapt from the windows into extended articles of clothing, held by others in the streets below, and were eared. The majority of those in the theatre were, howerer, unable to esoape, and were burnt to death. Over three hundred corpses have up to the present been extricated from the ruins of the building, which had been completely gutted. Later news states that five hundred corpses in all have been extricated from the sceae of last night's fire at the theatre, and it is feared that the total loaa of life was fully 750.
