MR JOHNS AT CAMBRIDGE WEST.
This candidate addressed a meeting of the electors in the school<-room, Cambridge Weßfc, on Saturday evening last. There were about 30 persona present. After nearly every gentleman in the room had declined the honor of filling the chair, Mr Morris at last consented to occupy the position. The chairman in opening the meeting, requested a fair heiirinp for the candidate, who delivered an address very similar to that given in Hamilton ou Thursday night last. Prior to commencing his addres«, Mr Johns read telegrams from Sir George Grey, expressing that gentleman's satisfaction at his candidature. In the courae of his remarks, he severely censured the conduct of the Government, supported by the member for Waipa, in imposing £300,000 additional customs duties, and after censuring the actions, condemned the opinions of the candidates who opposed him. Mr Allen asked what plan would he have adopted to make up a deficiency of £1,000,000, which was found to exist when the Hall Government took office. In reply Mr Johns taid that that reminded him that he omitted to speak re garding the spendthrift Grey Government, but he spid the previous governments had been reckless and extravagant in their expenditure too, and he did not think that the Grey Government had been very much worse than the others. For himself he might say he was a follower of Sir George Grey, but he would not support him in his wild and impracticable vagaries. With respect to the question that had been aiiked, there were a hundred different ways of raising the money. A vote of thanks was accorded to the candidate ; a vote of thanks and confidence being lost on a division.
