LATEST NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH -OWN CORRESPONDENTS.]

Auckland, Last Night. The police have arrested Fred Plummer, the perpetrator of a number of burglaries some years ago, on suspicion of his being concerned in recent burglaries. A deputation from the Thames Volunteers, consisting of Captains Wildman and Schofield, waited on Mr Whitaker to-day re the dispute concerning their pay. Mr Whitaker seemed to regard their case favorably, and promised to telegraph at once to Wellington. The deputation will probably wait on him again to-morrow.

GrISBOBXE, Last Night. At Gisborne, yesterday, John Gannon, brother of the candidate for the East Coast, horsewhipped Mr Mackay, the editor of the Poverty Bay Herald, on the Gladstone road, for publishing a statement to the effect that the name of Gannon could not be found on any baptismal or marriage register.

Wellington, Last Night. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day the enquiry into the stranding of the Penguin was resumed. The evidence of the first and second officers and the ateeisman was taken. The enquiry is not yet concluded.

Later. The enquiry into the Penguin disaster was continued to-day. The evidence is very foil, and late in the afternoon the Bench expressed the opinion that Captain Malcolm had been guilty of a wrongful act and neglect of duty in not coming on deck when called the first time. The evidence also showed that the chief Pophan, almost immediately before the vessel struck, had put the helm to port without any orders from the captain. He was ordered to lodge his certificate in the hands of the Court, and was put on his defence. The enquiiy is still going on.
