THE CAMBRIDGE RAILWAY.

In pursuance of an advertisement in this paper, calling a public meeting to urge upon the Government tli6 necessity of proceeding without delay with the construction of the Cambridge Railway, a meeting was held in the Public Hall, on Tuesday evening, at 7. 30 o'clock. Mr T. Wells occupied the chair. —The chairman explained the object of the meeting. Everything had been done by the Railway Committee and the County Council that was practicable, and he had received a letter from the County Council relative to the matter before them, an extract of which hewould read :— "T. Wells, Esq. Dear Sir, — The following is the reply received from the Under-secretary P.W. Department re speedy survey of Cambridge Railway : — ' Mr A. J. Hunter has been transferred from the West Coast to the Waikato district, and one of the first duties ontrusted to him will be the survey of the Hamilton to Cambridge railway line.'— J. McPherson." Mr Whyte had also given him a similar assurance. — Mr S. Bright, in moving the first resoltition, entered upon a lengthy narration relative to the construction of the railway through the Waikato, and condnded. by moving the following resolution: — "That in the opinion of this meeting the conduct of the Government is deserving of tho strongest reprobation for the manner in which it has treated Cambridge in respect to the branch railway, and urges its claim to immediate consideration."—No one offering to second Mr Bright'a resolution, — Mr Campbell Baid he did not think it desirable to pass the resolution which had been moved by Mr Bright, and considered that the Government were deserving ratber of thanks than of censure for their action in regard to railway matters and other public works in this district. Tho Railway Jommittee had not beea negligent in any way in carrying out the important duties which had been entrusted to them. They had received every assistance from the members for Waikato and Waipa, and he believed it was largely due to the efforts of these gentlemen that matters "Were now in their present satisfactory condition. The speaker said he had now lived for eleven years in Waikato, and never remembered any former period when the district had secured the expenditure of such a large amount of money in public worka throughout the district. If the oommittee, which had already worked actively in regard to railway communication, had thought it necessary to call a meeting to discuss this question, no doubt such would have been done. Should the Government fail in their promises it would be tima enough then to oall a meeting for the purpose of passing a resolution such as proposed by Mr Bright, but at present he thought such would be most unadvisable. Ho would, therefore, move the following resolution : — " That this meeting desires to express its satisfaction at the prospect of the early construction of tho Cambridge Branch Railway, and requests the oommittee, as at present constituted, to continue its efforts to secure its speedy completion." — Mr A. Barnes seconded the proposition, whioh was carried unanimously. — A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
