LIME BURNING IN WAIKATO.

A. new and what promises to be a successful industry has been started on the Hakaramita range. On the Waikato side near the summit, and adjoining the mountain road to Raglan, there exists a large deposi of limestone of exceedingly pure quality, an analysis having shown that it contains 87 per cent, of lime, and here lime burning operations are about to be commenced. The Und has been leased from the Crown Lands Board, and the necessary preliminaries are almost completed. Messrs Rollo and Loane (associated with the WaiVato Steam .Navigation Company) have erected a dwelling on the land, constructed a temporary kiln, and have a large supply of firewood ready on the ground. They only await the arrival of tools for quarrying the stone before commencing, which will probably be next week. The works are only 1\ miles from the Waipa river, and, as the road descends the whole distance, the carriage of the lime will not be a formidable item of expenditure. The Navigation Company hope to be in a position to deliver the lime all over the district at a very reasonable rate, so that it can be utilised for agricultural purposes. The want of lime for manure is beginning to be felt in many parts of this district, but the high price which has to be paid for it at preseut precludes the possibility of bringing it into general use. In a very short time, however, a change will be wrought. It will be remembered that lime is one of the fertilzersj so strongly recommended by Mr Maclvor, the distinguished agricultural chemist, who lectured at Cambridge some time ago. Should the industry prove a profitable one, the operations will be extended, and it may be expected that employment will be provided for a large number of hands.
