The Melbourne Cup Betting. Saturday Night.
Santa Glaus ha 3 greatly improved in the Cup betting, and has gone up on account of his running in the Derby.
Melbourne, Yesterday. The city is full of visitors, and the trains from Ballarat, Sandhurst, Beechworth, and G-eelong brought an enormous crowd of holiday folks, bent on pleasure, on Friday night. On Saturday — Derby Day — business in the city after 1 o'clock was entirely suspended, and the streets were deserted in the afternoon. The attendance at Flemington was not so large this year as last, but that can easily be accounted for, as on last Derby Day the Exhibition was open, and numbers were drawn together from all parts of the world to see the mammoth show. The principal event on Saturday was the Derby, and it turned out a complete 1 boil over' so far as the favourites were concerned, and was won by Mr F. F. Dakin's Darebin in the fastest time on record, with Santa Claus second, and Commotion third. The crowd in front of Tattersall's this evening is immense, and the utmost excitement prevails. Santa Claus has greatly improved in the betting, owing to his position in the Derby. There is some heavy wagering, and it is stated that Santa Claus has been backed to the tune of £60,000. Bourkestreet presents an unusually gay appearance, and iv some parts the thoroughfares are completely blockaded. The theatres are doing immense business. It is expected that the attendance to-morrow at Flemington will be large. Every attention has been paid to the comfort and safety of the sig^ht-seers. The train will run every 20 minutes to the course, and a large body of police will be in attendance at 'the' station to prevent accidents, if possible, and keep order. .Tbe Cup.
