The West Coast Difficulty has suggested regrets that vigorous measures were not adopted to bring Te Whiti to understand the proper relations of a subject to his rulers ; but there has been so much confusion of thought on the matter, and nowhere more confusion than on the Coast near the scene of the difficulty— that too much pains cannot be token to understand the real bearings of the question. The Evening Post takes the same view with respect to the threatened military operations as ourselves, and puts the issue with unsurpassed clearness. "We have always maintained, howover, that the time for action was in 1870, and that, that neglected, there was only one course open, namely, to steadily pursue a policy of firmness and conciliation, while being prepared at any moment to] resist force with force.
