It ha/f now transpired that Thorpe, late telle%-ja4he Bank of Victoria, who was arrested yesterday charged with embezzling £2300, was recently suspended, and since that time retained the whole of the amount of £2500 in batches to his successor. He asserts that though he nad used the money he did not intend to steal it. The progress report of the Police Commission has been issued. It recommends the superannuation of Superintendents Nicholson and Hare ; the reduction of Superintendent Saahcr, and the derating of Ward and Steele ; the dismissal of the constables who were at Sherret's hut at the time of the capture of the Kellys, and of the teacher W.illate. It ,ilt>o lecommends that Superintendent Hare be severely condemned as a disturbing element m the foice. A minonty of the Commissioners dissent from the lecommendation^ of the report. The Italian warship Europe, which went aground on Thursday on an island on the Queensland coast but safely got off, has ai uved at Batavia.
