SPORTING MEMORANDA. The V.R.C. Meeting.
It seems only a few months since the intelligence that Grand Flaneur had won both the Derby and Gup was flashed by wire to all the principle cities in the colonies. Such, however, is not the case, for we are on the eve of another "great event," and on Saturday week Fleimngton will throw off its sombie mantle and put on its holiday attire. The principle events on the opening day are the Derby and Maribyruong Plate. For the former Somerset is the favorite, and for the latter the Sydney horses — Segenhoe and Saivorna — head the list in the betting. Asaiulethe result of the Derby materially alters the wagering in the Cup, and it romains to be seen whother there is a "sticker" amongst the list equal to Mr Long's Grand Flaneur capable of doing the "double." After a two day's rest the Club will resume its bill of fair on the Ist November, when the " blue ribbon " of the Australian Colonies will be contested for Since DeMestre first won the Cup in 186 1 w ith Archer in 3m 52secs., this nice has become more popular year by year, and the success is in a great measme due to the late energetic secretary, {Mr It. C. Bigot) who, a few months ayo passed away and" joined the majority," During Mr Bagot's term of office he did more good for the cause ot racing whilst occupying 1 the position of secretary than any half-a-dozen secretaries could have done, and I say good luck to the V.lt C Committee in not forgetting the widow and orphans, for they have granted a pension out of their funds of £200 per •uinum to the widow for her life, and after her death to her two daughters till they attain the ago ot twenty-one. Touching the Cup of 1881 theie has been great excitement, both in Melbourne and Sydney, in battiuy circles, and the Duchess has been backed to win £40,000. The mavemay therefore bo recognised as first favourite for the Cup at 7to 1 . The daughter of Manuka .mcl Princess is being trained by Mr James Wilson, who, it will be rembered, prepared Savanaka and Progress for the " big pot" which didn't come off. That's no reason why a Duchess shoiild'nb Still, I doubt very much whether she will lead them past the post. The principal horses in the betting are Waxy, 100 to 9 ; Bathurst, 100 to S ; Sir Modred, 100 to 7 ; Lord Burghley, 100 to 6 ; Darebin, 100 to 5 ; the Duke and Sonrnus, 100 to ■4; Somerset and Odd Tuck, 100 to 3, and Wandeiing Jew, 100 to 1. The inauguration of the Ngaruawahia Amateur String Band will be celebrated by <i concert and dance at the suhoolhousc, Ngaruawahia, on Friday, the 28th inst. The best local talent in the district has been procured, and the entertainment promises to be very successful. A notice by the poundkecper of the Hautapu pound appears in our advertising columns. The new pure cash system now being initiated by G. and C. will ceitainly prove a benefit to the public. It has been a great success in Sydney and Melbourne and when strictly earned out the customer who buys at an establishment where the goods are marked low to ensure a rapid sale must be a great gainer. G. and C. sell their drapery millinery, and clothing- at such prices for cash as gives the buyer the advantages of a shareholder ma co-operative society, without the risk of being called upon to bearapoition of the loss should the year's business pro\e unsatisfactory. Garhck and Cranwell will aim to retain the confidence which the public have hitherto shown them, and are determined to give the pure cash system a. fair trial ; whether they gain or lose the first year Country buyers on remitting cash with order will be supplied with goods at co-operative prices ; just the same as though they made a personal selection. Furnishing goods, such as carpets, floor cloths, bedsteads, bed '3u;p and general house furniture, the largest portion of which is tuined out at our own factory, will be marked at the lowest remunerative prices, and a discount of five per cent, will be allowed to those who pay at the time of purchase. G. &C. having realised the entire value of their stock during their late cash sale, the present stock is new And cheaply bought.
