THE NATIVE DIFFICULTY.

[BY TKLI2GIUPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION. [ Huvmu, Saturday. I have just been talking to Mr Hunter, Otakeho, upon whoso land the Maoris are ploughing. He tells me many pettleis blame him for not deciding to turn them off, but, as the Defence Minister threw tht responsibility on him of deciding which eour-ie was to be adopted, he thinks, under the circumstances, he did what waa best. Some other bottlers of the Plains have made private arrangements and exchanges with the natives, and both races appear quite satisfied. The rumours lately prevailing are now subsiding.

Christcburch, Saturday. The Christen ureh Engineers, City Guards, and Yeomanry Cavalry have oftered their services to the Government, in tho eveut of hostilities brenking out with the Maoris. The tofcalnumber of applicants for enlistment for the front was 220 Of the'.e, 161 were chosen, and all turned up without exception in splendid form. Among the numbers were, I am told, two medical men, one clergyman or excler<ryman, one lawyer, and a number of clerks, accountants, and some of the pick of artisans. Ihey are a fine set of steady men, and not sign of drink was visible on one. A few of them have means and only join for adventure.

Schedule in our advertising' columns. A schedule of the rural lands in the County of Manukau, to be open foi selection at ! the Crown Lands Office, Auckland, on the Ist November, will be found in another column. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, notifies that tenders will be received up to noon on Monday, the 31st mst., for the lease for fourteen years of Section 16, Block II , To Aroha, known as the Hot Springs Reserve. The Valuation List for the Te Aroha Riding 1 , for the year iBBr, is now open for inspection at the office of Mr Chas. Tuck, Cambridge. The first anniversary of the Waikato Branch, No. 153, H.A.C.B. Society, will be celebrated by a social gathering in the Oddfellows' Hall on the 18th inst. A meeting of ratepayers of the Cambridge Highway District will be held at Camp's Hotel, Tamahere, on Wednesday, the 19th inst., at 2 p.m., to elect a trustee in the place of Mr C. Snowden, resigned. The new pure cash system now being initiated by G. and C. will certainly prove a benefit to the public. It has been a great success in Sydney and Melbourne and when strictly carried out the customer who buys at an establishment where the goods are marked low to ensure a rapid sale must be a great gainer. G. and C. sell their drapery millinery, and clothing at such prices for cash as gives the buyer the advantages of a shareholder in a co-operativesociety,withouttherisk of being called upon to bear aportton of the loss should the year's business prove unsatisfactory. Garlick and Cranwell will aim to retain the confidence which the ijtiblic have hitherto shown them, and are determined to give the pure cash system a fair trial ; whether they gain or lose the first year. Country buyers on remitting cash with order will be supplied with goods at co-operative prices ; just the same as though they made a personal selection. Furnishing' goods, such as carpets, floor cloths, bedsteads, bed. '3uip and gencrai house furniture, the largest portion of which is turned out at our own factory, will be marked at the lowest remunerative prices, and a discount of five rjer cent, will bo allowed to those who pay at the time of purchase. G. &C. having realised the entire value of their stock during their late .cash sale,' the present Stock is nrw and cheaply bought. An inspection is invited. — Garlick and Cranwell, City Hall Famishing Arcade Queenstreet, Auckland
