CARRIAGE OF MANURES ON THE RAILWAY.

Our Te Awamutu correspondent writes : — "The settlers here- aie still complaining loudly in all directions of the overcharges made by the railway authorities for the carriage of artificial manures. In one instance, for example, an active farmer of his land about here has to pay £3 ISs 4d freight on a truck load of bonedust supposed to contain 5 tons, though it is 3 cvvt. short, by the bye, fiom Auckland to Ngaroto. It is always understood that the conveyance of mauures and farm implements as nidispensiblcs and productive of good to the country generally shall be chained at the lowest possible xato, at which railways can pay expenses. Any company comprising business men would know that if a fanner is prevented from using manures through the excessive charges for carnage, and only glows o tons of potatoes on the laud, that with the uso of manure would grow 10 or 12 tons, the company whose overcharges prevent him from making the best return from his laud do themselves an even greater injury than him, as they have only 5 tons of potatoes to carry, whde liberality would have bi ought them 10. and they would sooner carry his manures for nothing than lose the curiage of his ciops. Of comse only the mind of Bumbledom f.ulh to sec the piopcr and sensible way of business, and the land-owners, the back-bone of the country, are disgusted and dispirited m the same spirit that always impeh the official to try his best in every dcp.utinent not to do the work he is paid for properly.
