NGARUAWAHIA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Ox the 21st instant Mr Kennedy Hill sold by public auction the old brick gaol for the sum of £35. The matter was a complete boil over so far as the Public Hall Committee were concerned; that body applied through our member for a grant of the building, and the Government consented to offer it for sale, so that the committee might purchase the material if they choose. Arrangements were made with the unanimous consent of the town and country settlers that the committee would not be opposed in the purchase of it, and all had promised not to bid. However, some did not promise that they would not get another to bid for them. The arrangements were that if anyone should outbid the committee, all could then wire in. The best laid schemes, &c, proved correctness of the old saying in this instance. The relic of Maori panic days was knocked down to an outsider, and at a figure that considerably astonished the speculators. The Town Hail movement is now a thing of the past. The school-room must continue to do duty. The Waipa County Council will be able to complete the up country improvements out of the Government subsidy, and as far as desirable from the Newcastle Riding. Should they fall short of funds we will be most happy to pay a special rate when the new Councillors are returned. Under the new by-law of the Newcastle District Board the Ranger will— especially as he has to make an oath that he will impartially and fearlessly discharge his duties — have a busy time of it.
