EXTRAORDINARY SCORING AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY.
, The He cord Beaten. The Cambridge University Cricket Ground has in its time been noted for some very tall scoring, but on Tuesday and Wednesday last all records on this and other English grounds were beaten. The match under notice was between Caius C.L.V.C.C. and Emmanuel C.L.V.C.C, the latter with two substitutes, one of them being William Nichols Roe, who was, until coining to Cambridge in October in 1879, at the Clergy Orphan School, Canterbury, where he earned a name for his large scoring, as in 1878 he played one not out inning* of 226 and six 100's, being three times not out. Mr Roe has several times been tried for his club, but in these matches he was unsuccessful. He several times scored largely for his college, viz., Magdalen, and was last term elected captain of the University Long Vacation Cricket Club, and in this match he has made the name of Roe famous for his grand score of 415 not out. This score was made up by one 6, six s's, sixteen 4's, forty-eight 3's, fifty-two 2's, and sixty-seven singles. Roe ran no fewer than 708 runs, and was at the wicket only four hours and fifty-five minutes. The bowling waa very tame, but Roe never gave a chance until he had made 200 odd, and after this he gave two rather easy and one difficult chances. Four hundred runs have only twice before been scored by one individual, and these were by ]5, F. S. Tylecote, who made 404 not out at Clifton in 1868 in a school match, and the other by the champion, W. G-. Grace, when he obtained 400 not out at Great Grimsby for the United Eleven of England against Twenty- two of Worsley Club in 1876. The Emmanuel total, too is the largest ever made for four wickets, Score :—: —
