T ASM AN I AN MERINOS.
Tasmania may well boast of the premier positiou she has attained in the production of first-class stud .sheep. At the annual salu of Tasmuniau hheep recently held at Sydney, the Believuo Hock mine thyn maintained its far-famed reputation for excellence. Mr James Gibson received no less a sum than 004 jzuineas for Sir Thomas JL, the hip-bent prico which has ever been received in the Australian Colonies, or peihaps in any other country for a Merino sheep, except c% Sir Thomas," who was sold home six years ago ub Melbourne, for 680 iruinea*. Sir Thoinaa' progeny up to that time has realised upwards of £'5000, and, in fact, this line of blood seems to be the " Stock well" of the Merino sheep. Sir Thomas 11. is a son of "Sir Thomas.*' Twenty other' stud rams averaged 78 guineas each, and 10 ewes 29 guineas each. Another successful sale was held of Tasmanian Merinos, the property of Messis YV. Gibson and Son : their five-year-old stud ram Prince 11. was knocked down at 510 guineas, while 22 other stud .rams averaged 86 guineas each ; 80 selected rams averaged over 19 guineffft; eijrht'eweß made over 39 j_ guineas each. The total ot the sale^ (109 sheep) realised 4238 guinea. Messrs \V. Gibson and Son have every reason tp ,bo [proud of the result. The average for 23 stud rams was 114' guineas. Prince JLL, the highest priced, one (510 guineas), is a splendid sheep/ and has never been beatep.Jin any showyard. It may bo menfctqned that Iytes, srs Gibson and Son, like Mr, James GJbgon, are not in the habit of .housing , their ' sheep, and .the successful sales of the " Beilevue" and " Scone" ( sheeD are striking proof 'thnt i/ the i '''Ta&mi|nia,n Merinos Hre not indebted for 1 Weiv excel- ! lence to any pampering pVnurein'g,' but rather to h ions?
