PROPOSED CR ICKET AND FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIONS FOR WAIKATO.

At the 'cldsVof the" meeting 'of 'the Hamilton Cricket Club on Saturday evening, .those; present fortnecl themselves into a meeting to discuss the proposition for establishing associations ; for , the advancement of the < national games of cricket and football in the Waikato. The chair was occupied by Mr tf. W. H. Wood. — Mr iNorthcroft, in bringing the subject' before the meetingj sajd the idea of forming association^ of this kind had long becyi a favorite one with Kirn, and he had communicated, his views to several players, all of whom cordially agreed with him. It must have "occurred to them all that it was a very expensive matter to go to Auckland, and as things were, the expense had to* be borne solely by those players composing the team, while the whole district in a certain sense reaped the benefit. People were ready enough to pat their gallant representatives on the back and say " Well done boys," when they returned home victorious, but it was a very- che^p sort of generosity. (Hear, > hear.) He thought as the whole district participated in the glory, it should contribute something towards the expense. He" was in favorf of two associations — one for cricket, ana one for football, because ii was extremely probable that many of those who favored one game would have little sympathy with the other. In addition, it would prevent disputes and unpleasantness. He would suggest that the members of other clubs be communicated with, asking them to nominate delegates to meet at some central place to arrange details. He believed it was -generally admitted that an association wasa necessity. — Mr T. G-. Sandes agreed with the remarks made by MrNorthcroft, but suggested that the question of establishing a branch of the Auckland Provincial Association in Waikato should be considered. He was of opinion that the Provincial Association would be productive of much good, but admitted that something of the kind was urgently needed in the Waikato. Indeed he had. broached the subject some years ago, and although no action was taken the opinions expressed were decidedly in favor of the project — Mr Northcroft could not see that any good would be secured by making the Waikato a branch of the Provincial Association. W T hat the former was required for was this : to enable them to send the best men to play in other places. The benefits accruing from the Pro\ iucial Association could be best secured by each indhidual club joining. — After a few remarks from the Chairman and other members in support of the course suggested by Mr Northcroft, Mr Sandes begged to move the following: — "That it is advisable to form associations, in WaiUato for the purpose of promoting cricket and football, to be called respectively the Waikato Cricket Association and the Waikato Football Association ; and that a meeting of delegates from the different clubs be held at Ohaupo on the 7th of October, 1881, and that the .Secretary be requested to ask that two representatives from each club, one 'each for cricket and football, be asked to attend the meeting," — This was seconded ' by Mr Noi'thcroft, and earned. — The acting Secretary (Mr Tonka) then drew" out a list of the clubs to be wiitten to, including all those within the counties of Waikato, Waipa, and Piako.— Messrs J. W. H. Wood and T. (i. Sandra wore appointed delegates for the Hamilton Club.— 'This concluded the business, and after a cordial vote of thanks to the chair those present sepa« rated.
