PIAKO. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Highway Matters.

Dueixr the la^t few weeks the members of the Waitoa Highway Board have m ide an inspection of most of the roads in the district, with the view of deciding on the most necessary works to be undertaken with the lunds at their dispoa.il during 1 the year. They find that it would not be a difficult matter to point out necessary works which would cost two or three times the amount of money they are likely to have to spend. At the Board meeting on Saturday the chairman read a rough sketch he had drawn out of a number of works which would have to be attended to. The main Thames- Waikato road winch has cost more than all the other roads in the district put together will still claim the first consideration of the Board unless the Government devise some scheme of adopting it. The bridges and culverts between the Nottingham Castle and the confiscation boundary will have to be renewed. It was thought the Government might give a small grant towards the maintenance of this part of the ro.ul as the railway works now in pi ogress cause extra traffic on it. The Government, however, have refused any assistance.. If the Government do not adopt the main road in some scheme of works, or grant a subsidy, it will be impossible for the Board to do much more than general patch work, however, anxious they may be to make roads to please all parties.— (August 29th.)
