THE NEW ZEALAND REFRIGERTING CO MPA NY.
Tmk following is tho concluding portion of the article, on the above sul)ji'i-(, u>, which we are indebted to rhe S.Z. Cowitry Journal; — The following is from Mi Wales' Report: — flic si/os of the jnuchuies to hiordered depend very much upon the quantity of stork available ioi export Eell-Colcmfin. No. 2 inuchinc costs (f o.b ) tit Glasgow £800, is s.tid lo blow 1.5,000 cubic feet of cold .iir per hour, and to fieeze a space of 83(>0 cubic feet. With two of those machines, which I think would be piefemble to one largo machine, five cold-aii chamber-* Oi freezing-roonia (each about 30ft. x 15ft., and capable of holding in a hanging position for freezing about 100 quarters of beef or about 630 sheep, or, supposmp all the five looms to be fully chirked 2000 carcus-es of beef or 32.10 sheep) could be fro/en at ouo time and repeated twice a week, or perhaps tivo times in n fortnight if required; or three of the I'ooms could be used alternately with one of the machines ut work. The freezingrooms should be built inside a larsrer huildinsr, with a clear space of 10ft. or | l'/tt. all louud, except whore the cold air is delivered. I'lotection on that si&e is afforded by the building in which the machine is placed. This space is not lost. The spoilt cold air allowed to ea- | cape fiom the free/ ing -rooms would keep it cool, and the apace can be used for packing and other purposes when all the free/ing-iooms aie in use. BellColeman No. 3 machine, the next .sue, is much larger and moie costly. The j price is £1873. It is said to blow | 30,000 cubic feet of cold air per hour, and to fiui'/L 1 i spieo of 20,000 cubic feet The two machines recommended ire .said to blow 3!l,000 ( übic foot pur hour, and to iicc/.o .i spice of IS, GOO cubic feet, and to cost £1000. It one machine only is employed in accident may stop the whole wotk, but with two machine* the stoppage is s<aieely piob.ibk 1 . It is abt-olutely necessary iliat the l.iilway should be connected with the woik-,, a:id tliat the tun Us .should be loarled in tlie building 1 . It the woiks aie within liom "20 to 30 miles oi port, a depot theie would not bo needed, as the meat could be earned from the tiucks dncct to the ship. Tlie ceiling is fitted with slidiug hooko for hanging the cai cases. GENERAL BKMARKS. From general observations I am quite satisfied that the export of frozen meat and other products is beyond all doubt a commercial success. The shipments of fish, &0., brought out for sale by the
Orient stc nners wore landed in splendid ijondition, and ntct'^WWh/a lexly sale, lowing a handsome profit. The Strnthhi'tii and iW?» shipments, although only e\[>onin<?nts, show suth'uicnt iiu'Triii to encoui^aire this most important' industry. Should it bo void' intention to proceed at onco with the erection of the woika, I ■should cpitunly rcooinmencLthe adoption of the Bell-Colemau machine as being tho cheapest and most economical of the two now vi use. However, m course ot a few years, I entertain the hope that these machines wi|l be greatly improved upon If you Older the machine from England, I would advise the bunging out of a practical man with it, well acquainted with freezing operations, which would save much trouble and expense in starting the works lam perfectly certain that many of the mibhaps our neighbours have encountered would have been avoided had tlus course been adopted.
