SETTLEMENT OF THE PATETERE LANDS.
Our readers will be glad to learn that the settlement of this vast tract of land is likely to be effected before many months pass over. Mr Halcombe, the energetic representative of the Emigration Aid Society of England, of which the Duke of Manchester is chairman, is now paying a visit to the Patetere Country in company with Mr E. B. Walker, with a view to negoitating for the Society which he represents for the settlement of the land in that district, and making himself acquainted with the country. When Mr Halcombe has concluded his business — or the preliminary part of it— with the Patetere Land Association, he will proceed by the 'Frisco mail to England, in company with Mr F. I). Rich, one of the directors of the Association, when the entire Patetere lands will be placed in the market for settlement. Mr Halcombe -was the gentleman who was successful in forming the Fielding settlement in the Wellington province some time ago, in which he ia at present interested, and the class which he represents are small capitalists of the industrious farming type. The Association do not intend retaining an acre of the Patetere property, but on the contrary will dispose of it all for settlement. As both the Government and the Opposition are in favor of the contemplated railway from Rotorua to Morrinsville those who are to undertake its construction intend pushing the matter forward without delay.
