WHATAWHATA. Highway Board Matters.
A Meeting of the trustees of the Newcastle Road Board was held at Kellow's Hotel, "Whatiiwhata, and it was decided that Mr Wells' tender for secretary should ' be accepted. It was also decided that before the next meeting the members or part should ride over the roads most needing repairs, and that the repairs to bridges should at once be taken in hand before any other work ia commenced. The office of ranker will be settled at the next meeting, the 31st of this month. No answer has been received from the Chief Engineer in regard to repairs to the approaches to the Whatawhata Bridge, which I referred to in my last. The pig question was mooted, but I believe will be dealt with at the next meeting, as no doubt they are a terrible nuisance, and have spoilt the appearance of the beautiful gras9 plot, also the water tables and formation in this township. The bridge is beginning to be felt a great boon to this place, farms and land being freely enquired after ; mobs of cattle and sheep aro to be seen passing backwards and forwards to the Waikato and Raglan districts, and I have no doubt that when the fine weather sets in, settlers at Waitetuna and in that neighbourhood will avail themselves of the river boat 3 to get their goods rather than depend on the coastal steamer which 1 am given to uudei stand is very irregular. I am glad to say Mr Richard'd little girl is doing well, and too much thanks cannot be given to Mr T. Y. Fitzpatrick for the ready manner in lending his trap to convey the child to Hamilton for medical advice.— (Own Correspondent, August 17th).
