COMPLIMENTARY CONCERT TO MR J. G. CULPAN.
The complimentary concert tendered fco Mr Culpan by the musical community of Hamilton, on the occasion of his leaving the district, came off in Le Queane's Hall, Hamilton East, on Tuesday night, aud proved to be a success financially and otherwise. The hall was fairly filled by an appreciative audience. The Hamilton Band played several selections on the bridge and outside the hall before the concert commenced, and aiterwarda played the overtures to the first and second parts of the programme, in excellent style, the improvement in the playing which has taken place since Mr Hadfield's assumption of the post of leader being more than ever noticeable. The programme was on the whole well arranged, and the various selections were evidently chonen -with care, but we may be pardoned for remarking that a stronger infusion of the comic element would have been an improvement. The choruses, considering the hurried nature of the preparation*, were exceedingly creditable to the ladies and gentlemen who took part, while the other part singing, including the Orpheus glees by Messrs Oulpan, H. Edgecumbe, Meacham and Wright, was carefully executed. The duets, vocal and instrumental, were charmingly rendered, and the same might, in general, be said of the solos. It is not our intention to particularise, but we cannot refrain from giving expression to the pleasure which Miss Lily Culpan's singing of "Carissima" gave to every individual member of the audience. By common consent this was the gem of the evening. This young lady possesses a very sweet voice of considerable range and great flexibility, and with care will develope into a vocalist of a high order. Altogether the concert was a most enjoyable one, and our only regret is that such entertainments do not occur more frequently. There is a sufficiency of musical talent in Hamilton, and if only the will were exercised an abudance of healthful recreation might be provided. The following was the programme on Tuesday night : — Part I. : Overture, Band ; chorus, "Friendship;" ballad, "The Song of the Laborer, and, in response to an encore, "The Englishman," Mr H. After the concert the hall was cleared, and dancing was engaged in for a couple of hours.
"Do as ye would that men should do unto you" is a glorious precept, and the recollection of it doubtless explains the reason why some women always kiss every other woman whom they meet. Thk electrical railway which is to run from the Palais de l'lndustrie to the Place de k Concorde will be one of the curiositiei of the forthcoming 1 -electrioal exhibition. '• f r ' - ' ' .
