ROAD MAKING. ' - i TO THE EDITOR. SiE.—ln the present state of some of 'the new made roads in' this district and the useles«ne3B o£ using raw clay for ballasting, I suggest that in' places distant from any gravel pits, &c, the raw clay should be burnt into, ballast, -a process which must be well known to many in New Zealand. The question of expense is the rub. ' Slack' coal I think could be obtained at Huntley for loading, a' few load 4of which would burn a large quantity of clay into good hard ballast, and carting the coal would be nothing to the carting of bo many hundreds of yards of material, which when saturated with water be- , cemes worse than water itself. Hoping some experienced hand will ventilate the matter, — I am, &c, , , ■ Practical. Hamilton, Aug 15th.
