Alleged Rape. Auckland, Last Night.
At the Police Court to-day, James Thomas Henry Montgomety was charged with unlawfully assaulting Demant Mary Ann Seeats m April List, she being under 12 years of age. The police asked for an adjournment. Mr Tyler said he hoped the Court would allow bail, a", according to his instructions, the charge was made out of spite. The accused had been managing the British Hotel for Mr-> Sceats, and in consequence of some difference between them accused left his position ut the hotel. Tho statement that the assault was committed so long ago as April made the case one ot grave suspicion. Sergeant Gamble stated that Mi Tyler had been misinformed by prisoner. It was only fail to Mis Sceats to 1 state that tho apparent delay in bringing forward the charge was not her fault, as it was only within the last few days that she wad m.ide aware of anything of the kind having taken place. Bail wa& refined. Inquest. At the inquest on Mrs Sandall, who died suddenly in Newton, a verdict of death from apoplexy was leturned.
