CHESS TOURNAMENT AT CAMBRIDGE.

It ia pleasant to notice the rapid progress made by the Cambridge Chess Club since its commencement this season, and the growing efficiency of its members through their continual application to the game, and interest in its development amongst the male portion of the community. Perhaps a more pleasing and acceptable pastime could not be selected by which the monotony of winter evenings might be evaded, and it is none the less pleasing to know that the Club have a suitable, comfortable, and convenient room — the Public Library — in which to hold their meetings and friendly contests. At its last meeting the entire force of this Club was paired for play by lot. As was expected, all members did not find it convenient to play, two having failed to put in an appearance, and another pair could not on account of business engagements attend their play. The games played were, however, poorly contested, Messrs Wells, and Dyer, being the only ones who divided the honors thus providing that at least a knight was the correct odds in Mr Dyer's case. The following is the result of the first round : —A. Hosking 2 to R. D. Stewarts's 0, Worthington 2 to Vigor's 0, Gh F. Hosking 2 to Robertshaw's 0, Beale 2 to Brennans 0, T. Wells 2 to Dyer's 1. Messrs Keesingand Morton won by default their opponents being absent. The drawing for the second stage is as follows .-—Wells v. Beale, Keesing v Worthington, Morton v. Gh F. Hosking. A. Hosking a winner.
