Action for Slander. Auckland, Last Night. Mr Jones, of the Royal Insurance Company, has issued a writ for slander, against Field, printer, for statements published by him in connection with Fori-' sonby district matters.
Sly Grog Selling. Samuel Cox, coloured proprietor of an oyster saloon, was fined £20 for illicit sale of grog.'
Fatal Accident. Gisborne, Last Night. A fatal accident occurred to Charles Colley. Jhe deceased, who was a carter, was driving out of town, when the horses bolted, and the driver fell off the shaft and was run over. Death i 3 supposed to, have been instantaneous. He leaves a' wife and a large family.
Native Meeting. A large and influential meeting of natives was held on Saturday to discuss the East Coa&t Land Company's unanimous decision in conveying the 50,000 acre block adjoining Johnson's. Henare Potate offered to sell the Ruanganehu Block to the company for 9s an acre, and take £3000 in shares, but could not wait, and therefore sold privately at 10s an acre. Plenty more laud is waiting for scrip.
